Week 12

Hello Parents

We began a new week with new letters, numbers and theme.

We also have a new addition to our team in the Early Years Unit, Mrs. Lydia Freeman who has had extensive experience working in the Montessori system. She will be our English class teacher in Foundation 2. Foundation 1 are lucky to continue to have Mrs Tahani as team leader for the group.

We would also like to inform you that the number of TA’s in each class is now 3 teachers. Each supports the English class teacher while working on many hands- on activities.

 Theme
Our theme this week was all about staying safe on the road.

It’s important to what know, understand., say and do to stay safe on the road. As in all areas of child development, in any group of children there will be a wide range of understanding and capability about this issue. Early Years Foundation Stage will understand the difference between the footpath and the road. They will know to walk with a grown up and to hold hands when near a road. We will introduce them to the “Stop, Look, Listen and Think” model of road safety and to the traffic light and zebra crossing signs.

This week children were involved in real decisions to help them keep safe on the road. The more children are involved in making decisions to help them to stay safer, the more likely they are to act on those decisions.

Children designed a “Unity Road” inside the building, made 'Go' 'Slow' and 'Stop' signs, traffic lights and learnt the road safety rules: "Stop, look, listen and go".

 Literacy

The children were introduced to the letter e, its sound /eh/ and how to write it. We learnt words beginning with e using silly soup, flash cards, the Jolly Phonics song and story:

We made egg crafts which cracked open and revealed a letter e inside.

In addition to worksheets, we traced e in sand and made e shapes using play dough.

We then made eggs in a pan mobiles which reinforced the jolly phonics song.

We finished the week by watching a video on Elmer the Elephant:

And coloured colourful elephants and made a paint-stamped Elmer:

Numeracy

For numeracy the children were introduced to the number 9, heart shape and colour brown.

We made a big heart cutout which the children decorated with their handprints:

We painted brown objects on the wall outside and went on a hunt looking for number 9s hidden in the garden.

We also made colour wheels and flower petal maths craft:

And a shapes pizza:

Next week, we will be looking at the letter h, number 10 and exploring people who help us in the community.
