Week 5

What a busy week the children have had this week!

Nursery children have practised fine motor skills and both colour and shape recognition by colouring squares red.  On Monday they used brush skills whilst trying to reveal the 'mystery letter' on the paper (see activity below).  On Tuesday they looked at different facial expressions. They had lots of fun on Wednesday, pouring and mixing in order to make delicious biscuits (recipe below). On Thursday they discussed the importance of cleanliness and bathed the babies (toy dolls) and washed their clothes.  On Saturday they talked about what things happen during the daytime and what things happen at night.  They then sorted pictures onto a poster to distinguish the difference.

Preschool children have been revising the sounds for the letters 's', 'a', 't' using songs, sounds and activities.  Each child made a sun, an apple tree and a turtle.  This week we rounded off our theme 'All About Me/Ourselves' by making handprints in modelling clay and talking about gender recognition (boy/girl pictures).  The children have measured how tall they are with foam bricks, begun to recognise the written names of their friends and studied their fingerprints with a magnifying glass.  They have revised the shapes triangle and square and have been introduced to the number 4.  They have also begun to recognise the concept of before, after and between whilst lining up.

Mystery Letters

What You Need:

  • Candle
  • White paper
  • Watercolour set
  • Paintbrushes

What You Do:

  1. Draw the mystery letter on the white paper using a candle. (White wax crayons will do the same job)
  2. Have your child use the watercolours to paint over the entire paper to reveal the mystery letter.
  3. Vary the activity by writing words/names, drawing pictures etc.  Also allow your child to use the candle to make a mystery picture for you to paint.
Basic Biscuit Recipe

Ingredients (Makes approx. 35)

225g butter, softened
110g Sugar
275g Plain Flour

Preparation Method
Prep: 15 mins  Cook time: 10 mins

1. Preheat oven to 180c / Gas 4

2. Cream the butter in a large bowl or in a food mixer until soft.  Add the sugar and beat until the mixture is light and fluffy.

3. Sift in the flour and bring the mixture together to form a dough.

4. Using your hands, roll the dough into walnut-sized balls and place them slightly apart on a baking tray, then flatten them slightly.  Alternatively, roll out the dough and use biscuit cutters to cut out shapes. Bake them in the oven for approx 10-13 minutes or until they are a light golden brown colour and slightly firm on top.

5. Carefully remove the biscuits from the baking tray whilst still warm.
