Week 24

We had an exciting week which included a visit to Kuku Zoo.

Nursery children have been tracing slanted and zigzag lines this week as well as finding their way around mazes.  They have made all sorts of farm related crafts including chicks and cows.

Throughout the year, the Nursery children have been focusing on 'Tuning into sounds', Listening and Remembering Sounds' and 'Talking About Sounds'.  This is an important step for the children to learn prior to being introduced to the sounds of the letters of the alphabet, which they touch upon from time to time.

Preschool children have been looking at pets and doing related crafts.  They have learnt the letter, sound and song for letter 'u' and revising numbers to 15.

The letters and sounds that have been taught in Preschool so far this year are as follows:

                               s - a - t - p - i - n  - m - d - g - o - c - k - ck - e - u

Over the next 5 weeks the children will learn the following letters and sounds:

                                                           r - h - b - f - l

All of the above sounds are from Phase 2 of the 'Letters and Sounds' scheme.  It is important to note that all of the above sounds will be taught again once the children start in Reception class.  There should be no pressure on the children to recognise all of the sounds.  They have had a good introduction to them and will remember some but may forget others.  This is totally normal and will not determine whether or not the children progress to Reception class.

We often have parents worrying about their children's progress in either Nursery or Preschool classes.  You really need not stress about how they are doing as they are being taught everything they need during school hours.  Children need to play as much as possible and shouldn't have unnecessary stress or pressures put on them at such a young age.
